Full course description
Contrary to current mythology, reports of the "death of books" are greatly exaggerated. In fact, the opportunities for publishing in the popular culture, trade, local, topical, and e-book markets are increasing. As a prospective book author, you need to know the differences among the various markets and the requirements for pitching material to publishing houses in all these sectors. This immersive course will cover all aspects of publishing but will especially focus on helping you write that all-important proposal that gets your foot in the door an launches your career as an author.
Sessions are:
- Saturday 3/28 - 9am - 4pm
- Sunday 3/29 - 1pm - 5pm
- Sunday 4/4 - 1pm - 5pm
Your course shell will contain further details for where and when to arrive.
Your instructor will be Don Corrigan, who is author of a dozen books, including Nuts About Squirrels: The Rodents that Captured Popular Culture (McFarland 2019), American Roadkill: The Animal Victims of our Busy Highways (McFarland 2021), I Fart in Your General Direction: Flatulence in Popular Culture (McFarland 2023), and In Search of Manhood: Men's Movements Past and Present (McFarland 2024), selected as the top pop culture book published in 2024 by the American Culture Association-Popular Culture Association. He has also published books on the outdoors and the environment. Corrigan has won many awards for his teaching as a college professor of journalism and for his work as a weekly newspaper writer and editor. He is Professor Emeritus at Webster University and Editor Emeritus at Webster-Kirkwood Times newspaper group.
